Living our Faith

Social Justice and Continuing Revelation

Westtown Meeting has long been engaged in defining and cultivating our relationships. These statements emerged after a lot of thought and worship within our community, and we anticipate that they will continue to evolve with Continuing Revelation.

Most Sundays we begin worship with one of the following:

Racism and Reparations Acknowledgement

(Approved by Business Meeting)

"We acknowledge the negative impact on generations of people of color of colonization, forced displacement, slavery, Jim Crow, and economic exploitation, and we apologize.

While Quakers are well known as abolitionists and civil rights activists, we freely examine and admit to Quaker involvement and participation in slavery and today's racist system. We commit to challenge white supremacy and to work for reparative and retrospective justice grounded in our belief of the equality of all people.”

Land Acknowledgement

Westtown Monthly Meeting acknowledges that we live and worship on land that was taken from Indigenous Peoples.

At the start of worship you might hear something similar to the following, or perhaps a longer statement:

“Good Morning Friends; as we begin our worship today, let us pay respect to the Lenape people upon whose unceded land we sit.”
